A 1-minute video released by the Newark Police Division shows Officer Roberto Vera instructing the woman to get on his shoulders before carrying her down three flights of stairs as the fire tore through 45 North 6th St., around 1:45 a.m. Saturday. Vera and Newark Officer Alicia Lauderdale responded to the call and canvassed the area for victims who needed to be evacuated. 2 Injured, 4 Families Displaced In Newark Fire Four Newark families were displaced in a house fire early Sunday morning, officials said. A two-story Vermont Avenue building went up in flames around 6 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. A female firefighter was treated after she fell and hurt her back, and a building resident was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, Ambrose said. The blaze was under control by 6:40 a.m. and is being investigated by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit. The American Red Cross is working with the four displaced families.
