A potential outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease is being investigated in several adjacent towns in Bergen and Passaic County, the health department reports. A total of seven cases have been confirmed with one “suspected” case still being investigated, the New Jersey Department of Health said in a Thursday release. The cases — which are treatable with antibiotics but have an incubation period of up to two weeks — were reported between Nov. 9 and Dec. 21. The Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito and is treated by “supportive care,” health officials said. A vaccine for virus prevention has not been developed. “Spending time outdoors, whether walking, g…

19 Deaths Triple At Nursing Homes
COVID-related deaths in New Jersey’s nursing homes nearly tripled in December, with more in that stretch than the previous three months combined, according to a published report. The news comes as what’s expected to be more than a month of vaccinations of nursing home residents and staff in the Garden State were beginning. It underscored the fact that New Jersey has the most coronavirus-related nursing home deaths per capita in the country – about 45% of its more than 17,000 confirmed cases. And the numbers are rising in step with the largest spike since May in coronavirus cases throughout…

19: NJ Long-Term Care Residents Who Go Home For Holidays Might Not Get Right Back In
New Jersey's health commissioner urged families not to take residents out of long-term care facilities for the holidays -- and warned that they might not get right back in if they do – as the number of COVID-19 cases statewide continue to spike. Guidelines issued by Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli include a mandatory 14-day quarantine for any long-term care resident, either in their own room or in an observation room, once they return to the facility after a family visit. For that reason, Persichilli urged the facilities to create a “reservation list,” as well as a waiting list, bas…

The first was a man in his forties from Essex County, who tested positive earlier this month, and the other a man in his seventies from Monmouth County, the New Jersey Health Department said in a release. “While WNV activity in mosquitoes has been much lower than what we have seen in previous seasons, it is important that residents continue to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites especially since most WNV human cases occur in early September,” Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said. Meanwhi…

Justice Department Considers Whether Murphy, Cuomo COVID Nursing Home Policies Killed Thousands
U.S. Justice Department officials said they are trying to determine whether COVID-19 policies of New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo “may have resulted in the deaths of thousands of elderly nursing home residents." Federal authorities said they hadn't launched an investigation. Rather, they said, they're conducting preliminary inquiries into COVID policies in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Michigan while considering a possible civil rights investigation under a federal law that protects the rights of residents in state-run nursing homes, among others. Letters…

Potential Coronavirus Exposure Temporarily Closes Paramus Private Day School
The Frisch School in Paramus will remain closed until at least Wednesday because dozens of students attended a bat mitzvah last month at a temple at the center of a coronavirus outbreak in Westchester County, officials said. Officials at the Orthodox Jewish school said that visit to Young Israel of New Rochelle potentially exposed the students to the virus, The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported. The students — some of whom since gone on a school trip to Canada — began a self-quarantine period earlier this week, Principal Eli Ciner said Thursday. One of them developed symptoms and wa…
