The bodies of two severely burned girls ages 6 and 8 were found at a Newark home following a fire over the weekend, officials said. Witnesses told detectives that there had been a birthday party for one of the girls on the second floor of the home and they'd been playing with fire near a couch in the hallway of the Eckert Street home on Saturday, Oct. 20, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. Firefighters responding around 12:30 a.m. found the girls unresponsive and severely burned inside. They performed CPR, but the children were reported dead at the scene, authorities said. …

A firefighter was injured while battling a fire that destroyed a house in Toms River, emergency officials said. Crews responded to the fire at a home on Bergen Avenue at around 2:04 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 9, the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention said in a news release.
