Rabid Skunk Found In Central Jersey Township, Health Officials Say
A skunk in Mercer County has tested positive for rabies, authorities said. The skunk was found near Van Dyke Road in Hopewell Township on Saturday, Nov. 23, the township's health department said in a news release on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The animal was submitted for testing at the state Public Health and Environmental Laboratories in Trenton. It was confirmed to be positive for rabies on Monday, Nov. 25. The National Weather Service has released snow totals from the latest winter storm. In New Jersey, the most amount of snow from the Friday, Jan. 19 storm appears to have fallen in Hopewell Township (Cumberland County) and Mount Royal (Gloucester County), where 6.5 inches of snow were reported. A New Jersey correctional police officer pocketed thousands of dollars in bribes from inmates in exchange for smuggling drugs, tobacco and other contraband into the Mercer County jail, authorities charged. The search for a missing person ended tragically when their body was found near a New Jersey mountain, authorities said. The person, whose name is being withheld, was last seen on Friday, Aug. 18, according to Hopewell Township and Pennington Borough police. A metallic object believed to be a meteorite struck the roof of a home in Mercer County, authorities said. The ranch-style home was occupied at the time on Old Washington Crossing - Pennington Road in Hopewell Township, police said. No one was hurt. The oblong objected measured 4 inches by 6 inches, police said. It penetrated the rood and the ceiling before impacting the hardwood floor, police said. A deadly crash shut down Route 295 in Mercer County Tuesday afternoon, state police said. The crash occurred in the southbound lanes near milepost 71.6 in Hopewell Township shortly before 2:20 p.m., NJSP Trooper Brandi Slota told Daily Voice. Police, firefighters and EMS crews were called on a report of a bicyclist struck by a car in Mercer County, authorities said. The crash occurred Thursday afternoon on a curvy, wood-lined stretch of Bear Tavern Road near Maddock Road in Hopewell Township, initial reports said.
