Update: Tree Downs Wires, Burns Route 17 Pavement UPDATE: Southbound Route 17 remained closed temporarily after a transformer fire downed wires and burned a portion of the roadway Wednesday night in Waldwick. Police initially closed the highway north at Allendale Road and south at Cameron Road around 9:15 p.m. Several area power outages were reported. Police, firefighters and the state Department of Transportation responded. Fatal Crash: Motorcyclist Ejected Off Route 3 Bridge Into Hackensack River A 28-year-old motorcyclist from Paterson was killed late Tuesday when he was ejected off a Route 3 bridge into the Hackensack River in Secaucus, responders said. Firefighters from Secaucus and East Rutherford recovered the body of the as-yet unidentified victim near the Clarion Empire Meadowlands Hotel south of the bridge about a half-hour after the 11 p.m. crash, they said. They also found his helmet. An ALS unit made the pronouncement. The highway was reopened around 4 a.m.

Fire Doused At Hackensack Company That Makes Hand Sanitizer Stands Hackensack firefighters made quick work of a Wednesday morning blaze at a company that makes metal stands for hand sanitizers used in medical facilities, among other products. The call to the Testrite plant on South Newman Street came in at 8:17 a.m. after the fire broke out in a malfunctioning dust-collecting machine, city firefighters said. The sprinkler system knocked down the main body of the blaze, they said. Firefighters evacuated the building, then vented it after dousing the flames. EMS evaluated a worker at the scene. Testrite has been in business a little over 100 years.
