: Firefighter Gets 5-Year Prison Term For Route 9W Crash That Critically Injured Teens
UPDATE: A volunteer firefighter who caused a road-rage crash that nearly killed a group of fellow Bergen County teens – and then inexplicably returned to the scene as a responder – was sentenced to a plea-bargained five years in state prison. Luke G. Stein, 19, apologized to the victims and their families, some of whom addressed the judge emotionally, during a sentencing hearing in Hackensack on Friday, June 30. Lital Aburus said she'd had nine surgeries, including cosmetic operations on her face, neck and arms, along with a broken collarbone. Ariana Grant spoke of laying in a hospital be…

Lodi Firefighter Gets Life-Saving Kidney From Fellow Responder's Fiancée
Volunteer Lodi Firefighter Anthony Maiolo has spent half his life saving others. So when it came time to rescue the former chief, Nancy Scaramuzzo didn't think twice. It was others who began seeking a kidney for Maiolo, 49, a year or so ago. That's because Maiolo, who'd been diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, isn't the type to ask for help. A leg had to be amputated below the knee four years ago after diabetes infected his foot, yet Maiolo has continued to serve his community at Lodi Fire Company 1 -- including responding to calls -- while getting four-hour dialysis treatments three…

New Details Disclosed By Lawyer In Route 9W Road-Rage Crash That Critically Injured Teens
A volunteer firefighter accused in a road-rage crash that nearly killed a group of fellow Bergen County teens not only returned to the scene as a responder but actively participated in the recovery effort, a personal injury lawyer said in announcing a massive lawsuit. Luke G. Stein, 18, of Cresskill, “helped carry one of the stretchers away from the wreck” off southbound Route 9W in Alpine earlier this month, Samuel L. Davis told reporters during a news conference at his Teaneck office on Thursday, Oct. 27. It was perhaps one of the “most twisted and cynical” things that he’d ever heard an…

Driver Seized In Colorado In Route 9W Crash That Critically Injured Bergen County Teens
UPDATE: A volunteer firefighter who was wanted in connection with a horrific road-rage crash that nearly killed a fellow group of Bergen County teens earlier this week was taken into custody in Colorado on Friday. Luke Stein, 18, was seized on a fugitive-from-justice warrant shortly after noon on Oct. 14 by police at Colorado University in Boulder, where he attends school, records show. Stein -- who's a volunteer firefighter in Alpine and Demarest -- had his vehicle's blue-and-white emergency warning lights on when he pursued and deliberately rear-ended the victims' car on Route 9W in Alpi…
