Federal agents on Thursday arrested an Elizabeth man who they said bribed U.S. Postal Service carriers to steal check books, credit cards and electronics from the mail. Ramsey police captured two suspected thieves near the borough post office with glue traps, shoe laces and other devices used to fish mail from drop boxes, authorities said. Bloomfield Man With Long Criminal Record Printed Up Fake Checks At Home
A 44-year-old Bloomfield man has been found guilty of multiple charges, including printing up and cashing fraudulent checks, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said Wednesday. A search of Woody Armand's apartment on Nov. 4, 2018, by U.S. Postal Service investigators and Bloomfield police turned up 37 decks of heroin, oxycodone, a handgun hidden behind a painting, debit cards that belonged to others as well as multiple checks. Postal carrier Steve Garofalo knew something was wrong when he saw a 2-year-old boy alone outside while on his route in Wayne. Garofalo, 57, of Totowa told CBS2 that he asked the youngster where his mother was and he pointed inside. The arrests continue to pile up for a Fair Lawn police detective who’s been tracking down checks stolen from a trio of post office drop boxes. A borough victim reported a $1,000 check that she’d mailed at the Radburn Post Office on Abbott Road was fraudulently cashed into another account, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
