As of 10 a.m., all southbound lanes, south of East Union Avenue, were closed.  Traffic cameras show cars backed up in the southbound lanes and what appeared to be overturned construction equipment. Man, 33, Killed By Car Trying To Cross Route 3 In East Rutherford, Police Say A 33-year-old man was struck and killed by a car on Route 3 Thursday night, Sept. 26, police said. Officers were called to the eastbound lanes of the highway at midnight where the pedestrian had been struck by a 2004 Toyota Camry while trying to cross the highway, ERPD Capt. Jeff Yannacone said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.

Tractor-Trailer Fire Shuts Down Most Lanes On Route 1 In Edison (Developing) A tractor-trailer caught fire in Edison, shutting down most lanes of a busy road during morning rush hour, officials said. The fire happened on Route 1 south of the intersection with Grandview Avenue on Thursday, Sept. 5, the state Department of Transportation said. An alert was posted about the incident at 8:28 a.m. The NJDOT reported all northbound lanes of Route 1 were closed. Three southbound lanes were shut down, leaving only one lane open. Tatiana Liceth, a 26-year-old Elizabeth resident, and Edisson Mauricio, 24 , were crossing the roadway at Routes 1 and 9 and Maple Avenue, when a tractor trailer that was stopped at the light proceeded forward when the southbound light turned green, a spokeswoman for the city said.  Liceth and Mauricio were fatally struck, while the driver remain on scene, authorities said. The crash remains under investigation, authorities said.

The 33-year-old man, who they said spoke only Spanish, was struck near the Browertown Road exit -- apparently after some type of domestic incident -- shortly before 1 p.m. May 6. He was taken to St. Joseph's University Medical Center in Paterson with serious bodily injuries. I-78 Springfield Crash A tractor trailer overturned in a crash with a passenger car early  morning, Monday, April 8 on Route 78 in Springfield, police said. The Freightliner and Toyota passenger car were heading east when the tractor trailer struck the back of the Toyota and overturned near milepost 47.4 at 5 a.m., New Jersey State Police said. The driver of the Toyota sustained minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital. There were no other injuries reported. The accident remains under investigation.
