Longtime Essex County Sheriff's Lt. Tony Butler Dies Tony Butler, a longtime lieutenant in the Essex County Sheriff's Department, died on Tuesday, May 9, according to his obituary. Butler, an East Hanover resident who was a native of Cedar Grove, spent 17 years with the Essex County's Sheriff's Department and was known for lighting up a room with his laughter and quick wit, his obituary reads.
