A 32-year-old Guatemalan national was seized by ICE agents after Fairview police arrested him for repeatedly violating a restraining order that was granted to his mother. Borough police initially arrested Jose Santos Bello-Rojas for threatening to kill the woman in late January, Capt. Michael Martic said. UPDATE: A Ridgefield Park man arrested on child sex assault charges hanged himself in his Bergen County Jail cell, Sheriff Anthony Cureton confirmed Thursday. Jose P. Manzano, a 39-year-old janitor, was found alongside his bed by officers conducting regular checks of the jail’s secure housing unit on Wednesday, Cureton said. He had one end of a bedsheet tied around his neck and the other to his bed, the sheriff said. “He appeared to have lowered himself, causing asphyxiation,” Cureton said. A 20-year-old Guatemalan national was charged with kidnapping and robbery, among other offenses, after authorities said he abducted an older woman at knifepoint on the street and tried to drag her to his Hackensack home. ICE issued a detainer on Esen Sarabe, who remained held in the Bergen County Jail. Bergen County sheriff's officers took a protestor from Teaneck into custody during a brief flareup outside the county jail on Friday. A video posted on Instagram begins with Niko Sanabria-John, 25, straddling a barricade shortly after 3 p.m. An officer and then another grab his arm and try to pull Sanabria-John onto their side as a group grabs their fellow protestor and pull him back. Two more inmates at the Bergen County Jail recently tested positive for the coronavirus, one of whom was hospitalized and another who was receiving medical care in an isolation unit at the lockup, Sheriff Anthony Cureton said Monday. The 40-year-old Salvadoran national in ICE custody and a 54-year-old county inmate brought the total number of inmates who tested positive to three, the sheriff said. Bergen County Jail Corrections Officer Tests Positive For Coronavirus, 7 Others Self-Quarantine
A corrections officer at the Bergen County Jail tested presumptive positive for the coronavirus, leading seven co-workers to self-quarantine as well, Sheriff Anthony Cureton said Thursday. Fifteen inmates at the jail were placed on quarantine, as well, the sheriff said.
