Racial Yearbook Mosaic Stirs Anger In Mount Olive
A Mount Olive High School 2019 yearbook photo design that separates white and black students has caused contention in the community. Photos of black students -- some repeated over and again -- were arranged to create the image of a “19” around photos of white and lighter-skinned students. "Proofs need to be signed before publication," one parent said. "Someone definitely dropped the ball. I told my daughter to keep it, it is a part of history now, the way of the world." "The outcome was not right," another parent added in the Facebook thread. Other parents felt the issue was being blown o…

Embattled Elizabeth Police Director Resigns
James Cosgrove, the longtime director of the Elizabeth Police Department, resigned Tuesday following an investigation into inappropriate conduct by the veteran law enforcement officer, Mayor Christian Bollwage said. "After meeting with the Attorney General today and discussing a path forward, I have accepted the resignation of Police Director James Cosgrove. Our conversation centered on changing personnel in the Internal Affairs Department, as only the Chief of the Police Department has that power," Bollwage said in a statement Tuesday. In addition, the whistle-blower comp…

State AG Calls For Elizabeth Police Director To Step Down, Appoints New County Prosecutor
New Jersey's Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal announced Friday that he's appointed a new acting prosecutor in Union County following widespread allegations that the public safety director in Elizabeth habitually used racist and sexist language. Police Director James Cosgrove has been under investigation since February following several complaints of inappropriate behavior towards black and female staff under his command, as well as allegations that he routinely threatened retribution against those who brought complaints against him. In an interview with Daily Voice earlie…

Swastika Found At Summit Middle School
School officials in Summit have renewed efforts to encourage tolerance among the students as authorities try to determine who is placing swastikas on school property. In the latest incident, the graffiti was discovered a few weeks ago in the stall of the girls restroom at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School. The swastika was about the size of a silver dollar, a city spokeswoman said Friday. The small size and the location of the graffiti make it difficult to catch the ones responsible in the act, so officials are largely reliant on students coming forward, Chief of Police Rob…

Booker Backing Bill For Slavery Reparations Commission To Senate
Sen. Cory Booker is pushing for legislation that would finally study whether African-Americans should receive slavery reparations. The HR 40 bill -- now coming to the Senate -- was introduced in the house by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) but did not call for black Americans to receive payments. Booker, a 2020 presidential hopeful, is backing a companion version of the bill filed Monday, to explore reparation proposals for African-American descendants of slavery. "I am proud to introduce legislation that will finally address many of our country's policies—rooted in a history of slavery…

Elizabeth Police Director Used N-Word To Refer To Cops: Attorney
An attorney representing a number of Elizabeth police personnel said the city's veteran public safety director is under investigation for using racist and sexist language in referring to staff under his charge. "He has used the n-word to describe his own black female cops," attorney Joshua F. McMahon said of James Cosgrove, who has headed the public safety department since 1998. McMahon said the 73-year-old Cosgrove also routinely used the "c-word" -- a vulgar reference to female genitalia -- and that several police officers have complained of the conduct despite a pattern of wh…
