Car Thieves Attempted To Carjack Mercedes At Gas Station: Newark PD
Car thieves driving a vehicle stolen out of East Orange attempted to carjack a Mercedes Benz in Newark on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 11, authorities said. The suspects were driving a stolen 2020 BMW from East Orange into Newark, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé said. At 12:05 p.m., the suspects attempted to carjack another victim's Mercedes Benz from the Mobil gas station at Frelinghuysen Avenue and Meeker Avenue before fleeing in their BMW, Fragé said. Ice Cream Vendor Robbed at Knifepoint: Newark PD
An ice cream vendor was robbed at knifepoint in Newark on Thursday, July 18, authorities said. At 9:30 a.m., the ice cream vendor was setting up their cart at the 200 block of Mt. Prospect Avenue when two men approached her from behind asking for ice cream, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. The suspects then pushed her into a cart, held up a knife to her throat while a second suspect took her bag, containing $1,000, an iPhone, a vendor's license, her ID and a bank card. A man who had been wanted out of New Jersey on child abuse charges was arrested in a New York traffic stop last week, when authorities found him with police uniforms and handcuffs, they said. Joseph Zuziela, 43, of Branchburg, NJ, was stopped in Oceanside, NY on Thursday night, Aug. 8. Charges will not be filed against a police officer who last November struck and killed a 44-year-old man while on-duty in a patrol car, authorities said. Sgt. Richard Sbarra was on White Horse Pike (Route 30) in the Atco section of Waterford when he hit Christofe “Christopher” Wita, 44, of Berlin on Nov. 23, 2023, NJ Attorney General Matthew Platkin previously said. Person Shot, Suspect Apprehended: Newark PD
A suspect has been apprehended after a man was shot in Newark on the evening of Friday, Aug. 9, authorities said. At 6:32 p.m., police responded to the 200 block of North 9th Street and a found a man who had been shot, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he is in stable condition, Fragé said. During their investigation, police located an adult male suspect and recovered a weapon in the area, Fragé said.

Vehicle Crashes Into Pole After Driver Suffers Medical Emergency: Newark PD
A man was hospitalized after he experienced a medical emergency while driving and crashed into a pole in Newark on the morning of Thursday, Aug. 8, authorities said. At 11:10 a.m., police responded to a vehicle colliding with a pole at Lyons Avenue and Hobson Street, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. The man driving the vehicle had a medical emergency and he was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation, Fragé said. No other injuries have been reported and the crash remains under investigation, Fragé said.

Several sharks have been spotted off the coast of Cape May in recent weeks, according to reports. A shark was spotted near the beach in Cape May Point at around 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, 6abc Action News reported. One beachgoer said the shark was about six feet long. Authorities have identified the Old Bridge man who drowned when his kayak capsized in Jackson Township. Search and rescue divers found the body of 29-year-old John Pereira in Prospertown Lake on Sunday, Aug. 4, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a news release. On Saturday, July 27 at 1:30 a.m., a 40-year-old woman said she encountered a man at Hudson Avenue and 51st Street, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Special Victims Unit said.
