UPDATE: Authorities on Saturday confirmed the death of a resident in a late-night Paterson house fire that responders said could have been much worse. Firefighters moved quickly to keep the four-alarm Lafayette Street blaze from spreading, snuffing the threat such a fire posed to the neighborhood of tightly bunched wood-frame houses barely two blocks from the Passaic River. Moving swiftly and with purpose, Paterson police and firefighters got 10 people to safety in a fast-moving fire that severely damaged three homes before dawn Friday. The three-alarm blaze broke on the second floor of a home in the middle of a row of squat houses on Lafayette Street out around 3 a.m. In less than 15 minutes, the flames quickly had spread to each of the two neighboring homes, as well. UPDATE: A massive, multi-alarm blaze that consumed a Passaic recycling company continued burning into late morning Saturday as firefighters fought raging flames along with bitter cold. All of the workers at Atlantic Coast Fibers plant on 7th Street got out OK and no serious injuries were reported in the inferno, which began shortly after 11 p.m. Friday. Paterson firefighters “saved a neighborhood” when they doused a blaze that collapsed the rear of a vacant building late Monday and spread to an adjoining building, Mayor Andre Sayegh said.
