A car thief has been charged in a January 2023 hit-run crash that killed a 5-year-old girl and wounded her dad and 2-year-old sister while they were crossing a Newark street, authorities said. Suhrell S. Proctor, 23, of Newark, was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle when he struck the girl and her dad as they crossed 6th Avenue at North 9th Street on Jan. 31, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. A 5-year-old girl was struck and killed while her father and younger sister were hospitalized in a Newark crash Tuesday, Jan. 31, authorities said. The girl was struck at the intersection of 6th Avenue and North 9th Street around 6:45 p.m., Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. Sources with direct knowledge of the incident say the vehicle flee the scene. Five men are behind bars and a large quantity of crack sits in an Essex County evidence locker after police raided a Newark home early Tuesday, Jan. 17, authorities say. Deputies executed a search warrant at a home on North 9th Street just before 11:30 a.m., said Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura in a statement. During the search, investigators say they found "over 400 vials" of crack cocaine and "around 200 decks" of heroin on the property. A Woodcliff Lake police officer was responding to an overnight home burglary when a fleeing luxury SUV stolen by two teenagers sped straight toward him, authorities said. Teen Struck By Car Seriously Injured In Newark
A teenage boy was seriously injured after being struck by a car in Newark Monday night. The 13-year-old boy was hit at Bloomfield Avenue and North 9th Street around 9:30 p.m., City spokeswoman Catherine Adams said. The incident appeared to have happened outside of the Newark Schools Stadium. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and the driver remained at the scene. The incident remains under investigation. Authorities: Suspect In Custody, 2 Victims In Newark Shooting At Large
Two victims of a Newark shooting remained at large while one suspect was taken into custody Tuesday evening, authorities said. Authorities responded to a report of a shooting on North 9th Street near 6th Avenue West around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a release. An investigation found Jalil Peppers, 22, of Newark, shot at two other men — one of whom returned gunfire, Ambrose said. Newark Woman, 18, Fatally Shot; Fourth Killing In City Since Saturday
An 18-year-old from Newark died in a shooting that left two other people wounded, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. Nakiyyah Miller was shot in the 100 block of Brunswick Street around 3 a.m. She was pronounced dead at University Hospital about an hour later. The two other victims are a 16-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, both from Newark. No arrests had been made as of midday Friday.
