Robert Illis, 57, died after a long-term illness on Wednesday, May 18, according to his family. Robert spent the last 20 years as a devoted firefighter with Engine 7, Mayor Ras J. The woman had been sheltering in her van parked at 67 Lincoln Park, in Newark. She called police at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, saying she was unable to leave the van because it was stuck in snow, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said. Irvington Fire Guts Convenience Store, Displaces Families At least 17 people were displaced by a fire that destroyed a convenience store and several upstairs apartments Sunday night in Irvington. Flames shot out and smoke was billowed from the building at Myrtle and Madison avenue as firefighters from several towns arrived around 11:05 p.m. The blaze quickly reached three alarms, but was mostly knocked down as of 12:35 a.m. Five children and 12 adults were reportedly displaced. Companies from Irvington, Union, Montclair, Maplewood, Newark and East Orange responded.

Kearny Chlorine Plant Fire Shuts Skyway, Residents Told To Stay Indoors UPDATE: The fire was brought under control Saturday morning after reaching four alarms.  The Pulaski Skyway in Kearny was closed in both directions after a manufacturing  plant went up in flames, stranding drivers on the roadway Friday night. The blaze, which hit at least three alarms overnight, broke out around 10 p.m. at the Alden Leeds plant, located on Jacobus Avenue under the skyway.
