NJ Birthplace Of Moving Motion Picture Now Has Museum, Screening Facility
Hollywood isn't where the motion picture industry got its start — that would be Fort Lee. And the borough finally has the Barrymore Film Center & Museum to honor that. The newly-built facility will open Friday, Oct. 21, marking the beginning of unique film programming in the region. It features a 260-seat cinema, film museum and archive — dedicated to the role Fort Lee played as the birthplace of the film industry. Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich spearheaded efforts to build the BFC and ensure its success as a film center and museum, but also an economic boost for the region. C…

Fort Lee Funds Dedicated To Families Displaced In Devastating Apartment Building Fire
UPDATE: A fund established to aid Hurricane Sandy victims will go toward helping families displaced by a fire that destroyed an apartment building near the George Washington Bridge. Two volunteer firefighters were hospitalized with relatively minor injuries in the six-alarm fire on Hudson Terrace in Fort Lee, which ignited Saturday afternoon, continued through the night and collapsed portions of the five-story brick building. Authorities initially feared the worst when a resident was unaccounted for, Mayor Mark Sokolich said, but that tenant apparently is out of the country. The Red Cros…

U.S. Supreme Court Overturns 'Bridgegate' Convictions
The nation’s highest court on Thursday unanimously overturned the convictions of two onetime allies of former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie who played keys roles in the infamous “Bridgegate” case. Bridget Ann Kelly and Bill Baroni didn’t defraud the government of its “property” by closing two local access lanes to the George Washington Bridge over three days in September 2013 as retribution against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled. Kelly and Baroni “could not have violated the federal-program fraud or wire fraud laws” because the plan wasn't intended to obtain mon…

New Fort Lee Police Chief Brings Extensive Experience, Communication Skills
It’s official: Fort Lee Police Capt. Matthew J. Hintze is becoming the borough's top cop. A Fort Lee native who attended borough public schools, Hintze replaces outgoing chief Keith Bendul on June 1, Mayor Mark Sokolich announced Thursday night. Hintze was an excellent choice, the mayor said, because “he has spent many years in management roles in the department and was already a well-known leader in the community.” The 17-year department veteran is also a borough firefighter and a lifetime ambulance corps member. Hintze has held several supervisory positions in law enforcement. As capta…

Convicted 'Bridgegate' Lane-Closure Figure Resentenced To Less Federal Prison Time
Former Chris Christie senior staffer Bridget Anne Kelly had her “Bridgegate” federal prison sentence reduced Wednesday from 18 to 13 months. Bridget Anne Kelly, 46, had her conviction tossed by a federal appeals court last November for her role in a political-retribution scheme against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich. Kelly, the former deputy chief of staff for legislative and intergovernmental affairs in Christie’s office, was convicted along with William E. Baroni, 47, formerly the deputy executive director of the Port Authority, in 2016 in what became a massive traffic jam at the Georg…
