NJ Transit Driver Shoots Teen Boy With Stolen Gun After Assault: Officials
A 15-year-old boy was in critical condition after being shot by a New Jersey Transit driver apparently being assaulted by him over the weekend in Jersey City, officials said. Charles Fieros, 48, was standing outside the bus on Monticello and Jewett Avenue when he retrieved the gun and shot at the group of boys who had assaulted him around 9:40 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said. Jersey City Police Officer Jose Vargas Dies Suddenly, 35
The Jersey City Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own. Officer Jose Vargas died on March 17, 2022. He was 35 years old. Born in Puerto Rico, Vargas later moved to Jersey City and attended the Midtown Community School, then Bayonne High School, graduating from Ferris High school, according to his obituary. He later attended NJCU. He served as a US Marine from 2005 to 2010, and was promoted to sergeant, specializing in Aircraft Communications/Navigation Radar Systems Technician. The driver wanted in the crash that killed a beloved Jersey City police officer last summer has surrendered to authorities, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office announced Monday. City resident Rafael Rodriguez-Rivera, 30, was behind the wheel of a 2012 Ford Escape when he struck JCPD Officer Morton Otundo on a Yamaha motorcycle on Communipaw Avenue around 2 a.m. on July 16, 2021, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Goats, Birds Seized In Jersey City Cruelty Incident Possibly Involving Witchcraft
Goats and birds were surrendered in an animal cruelty incident Thursday in Jersey City, officials said. Officers saw the animals in the home at 141 Van Horne St., in the afternoon hours. Unconfirmed and initial police reports cited possible witchcraft, along with dead and alive animals on the property "The City is working with the Liberty Humane Society on the safe surrender of the animals," Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said. A man was killed when commercial-grade fireworks exploded as he was attempting to fire them off in Jersey City, reports say.
