Birthday Party Fire Kills 2 Girls In Newark (

The bodies of two severely burned girls ages 6 and 8 were found at a Newark home following a fire over the weekend, officials said. Witnesses told detectives that there had been a birthday party for one of the girls on the second floor of the home and they'd been playing with fire near a couch in the hallway of the Eckert Street home on Saturday, Oct. 20, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. Firefighters responding around 12:30 a.m. found the girls unresponsive and severely burned inside. They performed CPR, but the children were reported dead at the scene, authorities said. …

Two people were injured after an explosion at an industrial gas company in Branchburg on the early morning of Wednesday, June 5, authorities said. First responders' attempts to save a man trapped in industrial machinery were futile as the man died on Friday morning, Aug. 25, in Ocean County. A driver and passenger escaped serious injury when their pickup truck crashed through a Route 17 guardrail and landed on its side down an embankment, responders said. Mickey McCabe was all about helping the City of Bayonne. The longtime first responder and community leader died on Monday, June 19 after a long battle with lung cancer, according to his obituary.
