Workers Burned In Explosion At Carlstadt Cosmetics Plant
A mixture at a Carlstadt cosmetics plant exploded Tuesday, seriously injuring a worker, authorities said. The 58-year-old employee was taken to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston after she was burned in the explosion at JCS Global Distribution around 1 p.m., Detective Sgt. John Cleary said. The victim had been mixing cosmetic products in a 55-gallon barrel at the Barrell Avenue plant when the mixture exploded, Cleary said. "No other workers were in the immediate area when the explosion occurred," the sergeant said, "but the building was evacuated as a precaution." OSHA was notified…

UPDATE: A 48-year-old Ridgefield man who was burned on 80% of his body when an explosion leveled his Ridgefield home on Monday succumbed to his injuries, authorities said Tuesday. Mark Schellack, who lived alone, was rescued from beneath the rubble of his garage by an off-duty police officer who lives nearby and two uniformed borough officers following the explosion on Abbott Avenue near Elizabeth Street just before 11:30 a.m. Monday. Explosions Rock Area In Saddle Brook Fire
Neighbors reported hearing explosions in a smoky Tuesday afternoon fire in a Saddle Brook home. The 64-year-old homeowner got safely out of the Lanza Avenue residence after the fire broke out shortly before 1:50 p.m., Police Chief Robert Kugler said. However, a half-dozen or so house cats of hers may or may not have made it, the chief said.
