Two men with long rap sheets were sentenced to 30 years in prison on Monday, July 22, for killing Shawn Watford in East Orange in April 2020, authorities said.
Anthony Hagans, a 35-year-old Irvington resident and Clarence Johnson, a 38-year-old East Orange were sentenced after pleading guilty to aggravated manslaughter and unlawful possession of a handgun while their trial was ongoing, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said.

A man robbed two women at gunpoint last week in Newark, authorities said.
On Wednesday, June 19 at 3:23 p.m., police responded to the 500 block of Orange Street after a person attempted to snatch a woman's purse, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé said.
When the woman resisted, the suspect brandished a firearm and she surrendered her purse, Fragé said. The suspect then fled westbound on Orange Street toward East Orange.

Robber Gets Life For Killing Clerk At Central Jersey Speedway Gas Station: Prosecutor
A South Carolina man who killed a clerk at a gas station in Edison during an armed robbery in 2018 has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for first-degree murder, authorities said.
Marcus A. Wright, 27, of Beaufort, SC, fatally shot the Speedway worker on Dec. 20, 2018, on Amboy Avenue, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.
Wright was convicted of murder in the slaying of John Bertram, 38, of the Fords section of Woodbridge, on Sept. 12, 2023. He also was found guilty of armed robbery, conspiracy and weapons offenses.

A thief who broke into a Clifton resident's locked vehicle pulled a knife on him before fleeing with his power tools, authorities said.
It was shortly before 5 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, when the blare of a vehicle alarm awoke the owner, Police Lt. Robert Anderson said.
