Edgewater detectives tracked down an SUV driver from Harrington Park who they said fled more than 10 miles on a flat tire after knocking down two poles with signs that were installed to make a dangerous intersection safer. Surveillance footage helped investigators find the black 2012 Mazda CX-9 that Carmela Stewart, 53, abandoned with a flat tire and heavy front-end damage on Route 9W in Alpine last Thursday night, Detective Sgt. Battery Explodes At Fair Lawn Pasta Factory, Injuring Worker
A battery on a piece of construction equipment in a Fair Lawn warehouse exploded Monday night, sending a worker flying, authorities said. The 45-year-old victim was charging the forklift attery at Zerega and Sons on Broadway around 7 p.m. when it exploded, knocking him back about 10 feet, police Sgt. Brian Metzler said. The worker was taken to St. Joseph's University Medical Center with back, arm and leg injuries, Metzler said. Fair Lawn police, firefighters, Heavy Rescue and Ambulance Corps members responded.

Man Dies In Fall Off NJ Turnpike In Newark
State Police were investigating the death of a 22-year-old Brooklyn man on the New Jersey Turnpike in Newark Friday night. Many of the circumstances were still under investigation Saturday morning, but according to police, the man was an occupant in a vehicle that had pulled over north of Exit 14 in Newark around 10:15 p.m. The man left the vehicle and was attempting to jump from the cars-only side of the turnpike to the trucks side when he fell about 80 feet to his death, the spokesman said. A Mahwah attorney who fell 15 or so feet from a ladder while painting and repairing a home early Tuesday afternoon was breathing but unconscious when taken to the hospital, responders said. UPDATE: A pickup driver from North Bergen and a Ridgefield resident were both hospitalized with minor injuries after the truck slammed into a house, authorities said. Ridgefield detectives were trying to determine why the 2019 Dodge 1500 crossed over Edgewater Avenue from southbound Oak Street and barreled into the home just before noon on Monday, Deputy Police Chief Robert Meurer said. A landscaper trying to burn out a beehive using gasoline started a fire at a Carlstadt fabric company, authorities said. Firefighters and police who responded Sunday to the Mood Fabrics Company building on Eastern Way found the landscaper trying to douse the blaze from outside the building with water, Detective Sgt. Driver, 78, Slams Sedan Into Route 17 Mercedes Dealership, Closes Showroom
A 78-year-old Maywood woman escaped serious injuries when her Mercedes slammed into a Route 17 dealership in Paramus, although the showroom had to temporarily close for repairs. Fears were raised when an aluminum support beam buckled and a window panel 40 to 50 feet up the side of the Prestige Motors building on southbound Route 17 shattered, said Kenneth Ehrenberg, the Paramus police and fire chief. A 76-year-old Saddle Brook man smoking a cigarette on his front porch Friday afternoon was severely burned after his flannel pants ignited, poilce said. “He didn’t realize what happened until it was too late,” Police Chief Robert Kugler told Daily Voice. AirMed One flew the Wilson Street victim to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston after he inadvertently dropped the cigarette in his lap, the chief said. A Dover high school student is in critical condition after being hit by a car on a highway crossing Route 46 after a football game Friday night, local police say. A tow truck driver was run over by a vehicle he was trying to hitch Tuesday morning in Fairview, authorities said.
