Police stopped a 2002 GMC at Bloomingdale and Elizabeth avenues around 1:20 a.m. Saturday because the plates were unclear. Ptl. Nicholas Cook determined that the driver, Elijah Martinez, was under the influence and arrested him.
Further investigation revealed the vehicle had been stolen in Cranford earlier that night and had been involved in a crash.
Martinez has been charged with receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, obstructing the administration of law and DWI. He was also issued several motor-vehicle summonses, including for leaving the scene of a crash, failure to report a crash, no insurance and careless driving.
He was processed and given a date to appear in Superior Court.
