'Check Washing' Investigation After Mail Stolen Outside South Jersey Post Office
Police in an Atlantic County town are investigating cases of what's called "check washing," authorities said. Hammonton Police and the U.S. Postal Inspectors are investigating financial crimes after mail and checks were removed from a mailbox outside the town's post office, the police department said in a Facebook post on Thursday, Feb. 29. The mailbox was tampered with over Presidents' Day weekend. "Check washing" is when thieves take letters from mailboxes and look for signed checks inside them. State authorities announced a bunch of new election fraud charges on Wednesday against Paterson’s council president along with allegations against his wife and campaign manager, as well. Alex Mendez, 48, has been awaiting trial in a case, stemming from 2020 council races, that has undergone a series of one delay after another. New Rochelle Park Police Chief Nabs Thieves Who Bought 61 Money Orders For $55,000 In One Day
Two out-of-state thieves who illegally collected nearly $55,000 by purchasing 61 money orders at post offices throughout New Jersey in a single day were thwarted by newly-appointed Rochelle Park Police Chief Dean Pinto, authorities said. Pinto, who officially becomes chief this Saturday, was waiting on line at the borough post office Thursday when he saw one of the suspects buy a $1,000 money order with an apparent gift card.
