: New Details Emerge In Police Shooting Of Jersey City Man With Mental Health History
One of a group of specially-trained Jersey City police officers shot and killed a knife-wielding city man after he charged at them in his apartment, authorities said. An EMS unit was the first to respond to 2:15 p.m. call at the Randolph Avenue residence in the Bergen-Lafayette section of the city on Sunday, Aug. 27, according to a release issued late Monday by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin. "Upon arrival, they requested the assistance of the Jersey City Police Department," the attorney general said. Patrol officers arrived just before 2:30 p.m. and tried to communicate with …

3 Paterson Officers Used 'Less Lethal Force' Before Two Shot Non-Violence Activist, AG Says
UPDATE: Three Paterson police officers first employed “less lethal force” before two others shot and killed a local non-violence activist who was in the middle of a mental health crisis last week, the state’s top law enforcement official said Wednesday. Tensions were rising in the city as New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin formally identified Najee Seabrooks, who was killed during the nearly five-hour confrontation at his home last Friday, and the officers who were directly involved in a release on Wednesday. Mayor Andre Sayegh, who has been criticized by community leaders for …

: NJ AG Releases Video Of Foot Pursuit, Arrest Of Newark Man Who Died Soon After
It’s unsettling to watch video of a suspect you know has died. The last moments for Raul DeJesus -- who led Newark police on a foot chase before collapsing near Route 280 two months ago -- are no exception. A series of videos showing the encounter that preceded DeJesus’s death at University Hospital in Newark were released by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin’s office on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Three of the videos come from police body cameras, one of them worn by the officer who began chasing the 43-year-old Newark native on foot after he ran. Two others graphically document the ar…

: Local NJ Police Try To Convince Man To Drop Sword Before Shooting Him
"Patrick, drop it," a New Jersey police officer says in a calm, steady voice, pleading several times with a man wielding a 3-foot sword to surrender. "Listen to me, I know you're going through some...," the officer says before his voice rises. "Patrick drop it! Get on the ground! Get on the ground!" he screams. "Drop the knife!" Then four shots are heard. The confrontation in Somerset County early last fall lasted barely a minute. About an hour and 20 minutes later, Patrick Chin, 43, was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. The comman…

NJ Attorney General Releases Footage Of Fatal Police Encounter With Agitated Paterson Man
VIDEO: A bloodied, agitated suspect writhes uncontrollably, falls down and then goes limp while being handcuffed by Paterson police, body camera footage released Wednesday shows. “I lost his pulse,” a city EMT firefighter tells the officers after they lift a lifeless Jose Gonzalez onto a gurney. “CPR?” one asks. They then remove the cuffs, turn him onto his back and begin chest compressions as the footage ends. Gonzalez, 41, of Paterson, was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center less than an hour later, authorities said. Acting New Jersey Attorney General Andrew J. Bru…

: Body Camera Captures Attack On Newark Police Officers
Body-worn camera footage captured a violent attack on a pair of Newark police officers that led to the arrest of four men earlier this week. Officers and an Essex County Prosecutor's Office detective were patrolling Fabyan Place and Cypress Street and approached a man who was thought to be in possession of a gun around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara said. That's when the suspect's two brothers came to the scene and physically interfered with the arrest. Body cam footage shows men ambushing an officer, holding him up against a fence and then throwing anothe…
