Historic Freehold Raceway To Permanently Close At End Of 2024 Freehold Raceway, the oldest racetrack in the U.S., will close after two centuries of competitions and Monmouth County history, officials said. Freehold Raceway will hold its final live races and simulcast operations on Saturday, Dec. 28, the half-mile track said in a news release. 'An Absolute Character': Entertaining South Jersey Horse Racing Announcer Dies, 67 A longtime South Jersey racetrack announcer known for his playful, entertaining flair died after a 13-year battle with brain cancer, officials said. Larry Lederman died at 67 years old on Tuesday, Mar. 5, the U.S. Trotting Association (USTA) announced in a news release. The East Windsor resident was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in 2011. The native New Yorker was introduced to harness racing by his father, a Manhattan business owner who enjoyed going to the Yonkers and Roosevelt raceways.
