The crash occurred around 7 p.m. on April 30, in Mullica Hill, injuring Jeremiah and Onya Smith of Mays Landing.
Family members are rallying to help them via this GoFundMe page.
Jerry, nicknamed "Huggie," has been a football coach for the Absecon Blue Devils and a basketball coach for the Mays Landing Lakers for many years. He grew up in Brigantine and Absecon.
Onya, a native of Mays Landing, is currently at home recovering from leg and hip injuries that require further rehabilitation.
They live in Mays Landing with their three sons.
Jerry is about to get transferred to at an Acute Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation Facility, "but it will have to be paid for out of pocket," said his sister, Carol Martinez.
"Sometimes circumstances happen in life that are beyond our control," the Martinez family wrote on the GoFundMe page.
Jeremiah’s injuries resulted in him being in a coma for eight days. Now, Jerry must get months of brain injury rehab, his sister said.
"We are asking for your help at this time for the Smith family to focus on their healing journey without financial worry," the page says.
Jerry and Onya will not be able to work while they are in physical rehabilitation.
"They will need as much support as possible with their 3 sweet boys—ages 2, 11, and 12."
