Brigantine police and firefighters responded to a 9-1-1 call at 9:28 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13 for a swimmer in distress. The Beach Patrol arrived and rescued two young children and their mother from the water.
According to a witness, the two children appeared to have become overpowered by the current and were in distress. The witness observed the woman run into the ocean to attempt to rescue her children and subsequently observed her become distressed and disappear underwater.
Life-saving measures were immediately taken by Brigantine Police, Brigantine Fire/Rescue, and Brigantine Beach Patrol.
The mother was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, in critical condition, police said.
The children were evaluated by Brigantine Fire/Rescue and were reunited with family, police said.
"Because of the mother’s selfless actions and the witness immediately seeking help, the children were able to be rescued by Brigantine Beach Patrol who were training prior to their shift on a beach nearby," police said on Facebook.
