Alejandro Huerta-Arias was found guilty of vehicular homicide in a crash that killed Mark Mandel, a 32-year-old Lakewood resident following a two-week trial, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said.

On Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at approximately 8:15 a.m., Lakewood Township police responded to Madison Avenue and Courtney Road, for the crash. Huerta-Arias was traveling northbound on Madison Avenue in a 2012 Infinity G35 when he struck a 2008 Chevrolet Impala driven by Mandel while he was attempting to make a lefthand turn onto Courtney Road, Billhimer said.

The Impala was propelled into a traffic signal and Mandel was pronounced dead at the scene, Billhimer said.  Huerta-Arias was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center  for treatment of a fractured leg, Billhimer said.

Huerta-Arias was traveling at an average speed of 93 miles-per-hour, more than double the 40 mile-per-hour speed limit at the time of the crash, Billhimer said. He faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced in May.
