Sussex County high school graduate and local healthcare worker Abel Sanchez-Casas died from COVID-19 complications at Newton Medical Center on June 18. He was 21. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, Sanchez-Casas grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 2017, his obituary says. Sanchez-Casas worked in healthcare at Broad Step Willow Glen in Sparta. A New Jersey man has been infected with a rare mosquito-borne virus, state health officials confirmed Wednesday. A Sussex County man in his 60s started suffering a fever and various neurological symptoms in May and later tested positive for the Jamestown Canyon virus, marking the state’s first detection of a mosquito-borne disease this year. The Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito and is treated by “supportive care,” health officials said. A Sussex County farm is desperately seeking answers on social media after more than a dozen ducks were stolen from the property over the weekend. Sussex County Fisherman, 57, Goes Overboard, Dies On Jersey Shore
A 57-year-old Sussex County man died when he fell off his boat on the Jersey Shore Saturday, New Jersey State Police said. The Scott Sabisch, of Glenwood, fell from the 37-foot vessel in Sandy Hook Bay at 2:53 p.m., NJSP Sgt. Philip Curry said. Sabisch was unresponsive and later pronounced dead, Curry said. The incident remains under investigation.

A North Jersey hospital placed on lockdown Monday morning has been reopened and deemed safe, police said. Police requested a temporary lockdown of Newton Medical Center after receiving a report that a possible tenant of 183 High St. may have been seen entering the building carrying a suspected shotgun around 8:25 a.m., Chief Robert Osborn Jr. told Daily Voice. The tenant and weapon were found in a suite at 183 High St. and determined not to be a threat to the public, Osborn said. A 13-year-old girl died in a Sussex County house fire Friday night, authorities confirmed. Firefighters responded to the Nestor Street home in Franklin around 10 p.m., where the girl's body was recovered after the fire had been put out, Franklin Borough police said. A Sussex County scammer identified people who’d been dead for years as business partners to help collect $1.9 million from the federal fund established to help struggling companies during COVID-19, authorities charged. A Jersey Shore man accused of posting threats toward Sparta school officials on social media will not face criminal charges, authorities said. More than a dozen people were injured when a bus overturned on snowy roads in Sussex County Thursday afternoon.
