Passaic House Fire Doused
Friends said a woman and her teenage children lost most of their belonging when a July 4th weekend fire damaged their Passaic home. Firefighters quickly got to the Third Street address off Essex Street shortly before 8:30 p.m. and had the fire under control in barely a half-hour. They limited the fire damage to the first floor, where the blaze apparently began, and the second floor, which sustained heavy smoke damage. No injuries were reported. Mutual aid responders included firefighters from Clifton, Paterson and Wallington. City fire officials were investigating the cause. The 3rd…

A woman was confirmed dead in a fire Wednesday afternoon that devoured a Dominican restaurant in Passaic. The mother went to another while the girl waved her hands to get firefighters' attention, witnesses said. Firefighter Ricardo Figueroa climbed a ground ladder and carried the girl down with help from Deputy Chief Chris DiBella, Lora said. Meanwhile, Trentacost redirected a 35-f…

It wasn't the NFL draft, although it looked somewhat like it when two dozen promoted Passaic police officers and firefighters were sworn in to their new positions Monday via Zoom. Mayor Hector Carlos Lora presided over the unprecedented virtual ceremony, during which 19 police officers and five firefighters were officially promoted amid the coronavirus pandemic. The firefighters were delayed but made it to the show after responding to a four-alarm fire on Dayton Avenue during which they and their Clifton colleagues rescued a 4-year-old girl and her mother, Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost. Passaic Firefighter, 33, Dies Of Coronavirus Complications
Passaic firefighter Israel Tolentino died early Tuesday morning of coronavirus-related complications, city officials said. Tolentino was 33 years old. "He courageously fought an illness but succumbed to complications of COVID-19," Passaic Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost said with tears in his eyes. Tolentino "fulfilled his lifelong dream" and joined the fire department in 2018, Trentacost said. He worked as an EMT on his days off and volunteered with the city's office of emergency management. In 2017 and friends held a coat drive to help the needy, Mayor Hector Lora said. Tolentino is sur…
