A 26-year-old real estate agent from Paterson was driving the hit-and-run sedan that struck and killed a Garfield mother of five outside her home, authorities confirmed. Victor E. Diaz Castenada was being held in the Bergen County Jail on Tuesday, Jan. 10, in connection with the death exactly a week earlier of Shazia Faazal, 51. Castenada was driving a 2010 Honda Civic that struck Faazal on Outwater Lane near Alaska Street at 8:51 p.m. Jan. 3 and kept going, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. A 23-year-old ex-con from Garfield who was paroled only weeks ago after serving time for a drive-by was arrested and charged with a shooting last week at a local bar. Ramon Santana, 23, was wanted on a warrant for the 1 a.m. shooting on June 19 when Garfield Police Officer Nicholas Kopacz spotted him walking near the corner of Midland Avenue and Outwater Lane exactly a week later -- also around 1 a.m., Capt. Saddle Brook Man, 71, Struck, Killed By Commuter Train In Garfield
A 71-year-old Saddle Brook man was struck and killed by a commuter train while crossing the tracks in Garfield Tuesday afternoon, responders and witnesses said. Midland Avenue was temporarily closed from Semel Avenue to Outwater Lane after the mishap occurred around 3:30 p.m. near the Plauderville Station. The No. 64 train left Port Jervis and 1:35 p.m. and was due to arrive in Hoboken at 3:54 p.m., NJ Transit's Kate Thompson said.
