Shock and sorrow spread through Haledon and beyond on Sunday with word that the school district’s beloved head custodian and his wife were killed in a horrific crash hours earlier. Responders tried in vain to revive Corrado LaRosa, the director of physical plant and custodial services, and his wife, Tina LaRosa, following the crash near the corner of Belmont Avenue and John Street minutes before midnight. Not One, Not Two, But Three Tractor-Trailers Crash On Notorious Route 287 Stretch
A driver was serious injured during a series of tractor-trailer crashes that closed both sides of a notorious stretch of Route 287 in Oakland, jamming traffic until well after sunrise Wednesday. Two rigs crashed separately on the rain-soaked highway's northbound side near Skyline Drive barely 15 minutes apart just after 2:30 a.m. A medical chopper was summoned for the seriously injured driver and then cancelled because of the weather. Bergen Cub Scout Leader, Youth Sports Coach Charged With Sexually Assaulting Minor
A Bergen County Cub Scout leader from Oakland who also coaches youth sports was charged with sexually assaulting a minor. Gary Sarno, 47, remained held Monday in the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing Wednesday in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack. Sarno "engaged in sexual conduct with a child" between 16 and 17 years old late last December, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. Oakland PD: Landscape Equipment Thief Captured In Paterson
Oakland police tracked down and arrested a Paterson man who they said stole a large collection of landscaping equipment hours earlier. Several backpack leaf blowers, weed whackers, a pole trimmer and other miscellaneous equipment were taken after someone cut the hinge on the side door of a trailer parked in a lot off Bauer Drive sometime between 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon and 7:15 a.m. Monday. A 20-year-old former high school cross-country runner from Oakland burglarized three borough businesses and attempted to break into at least five others, authorities said Tuesday. Several weekend motorcycle crashes in North Jersey – including at least one fatality – began Friday when a Newark motorcyclist was killed on Route 280. Charles L. An Oakland landscaper was drunk when he bailed out of his pickup truck and fled the scene following a crash that sent another resident’s car into a tree, authorities said. A car carrier and a dump truck both toppled over on Route 287 in Oakland around noontime Friday, closing several lanes and causing major delays well into the afternoon. Five heavy-duty wreckers were called to clear the roadway after the northbound rig hauling SUVs tipped over the divider. A former star lacrosse player for Indian Hills High School in Oakland was killed along with a teammate from Long Island in a car crash in North Carolina, authorities said.
