NJ Reports Three West Nile Virus Cases
The New Jersey Department of Health has confirmed the state’s first human cases of the West Nile Virus, much earlier than in prior seasons. Two residents, one more than 70 years old and the other under 18, tested positive for the illness transmitted by mosquitoes after reporting symptoms in the first week of July, the state's health department said. A 24-year-old man from Camden has been sentenced to 11 years in New Jersey State Prison for a fatal hit-and-run crash in Middlesex County. Giovanni Gaines-Little was sentenced on Monday, July 29 in connection with a crash that occurred on Feb. 25, 2023, in South Brunswick, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone. A New Jersey grand jury has indicted two Middlesex County men for allegedly defrauding fuel investors out of approximately $6.7 million, authorities said. The scheme used sham companies and false identities to deceive investors into believing they would receive large guaranteed returns from investments in fuel products, according to Attorney General Matthew J. Cape May County leaders are issuing a warning after eight mosquito groups tested positive for West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis. Seven mosquito collections tested positive for West Nile and EEE was detected in another during June and July, the Cape May County Department of Health said in a news release on Monday, July 22. A 20-year-old Middlesex County man was arrested and charged on Wednesday, July 17, with sexually assaulting a child in Bergenfield, authorities said. In May, Bergenfield police and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office began investigating the sexual assault of a juvenile under the age of 16 and determined Richard Simko had assaulted them on multiple occasions, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
