Large Crowds, Gov. Murphy Mourn Death Of Esteemed Lakewood Rabbi Throngs of people were expected at a funeral service for an esteemed rabbi in Lakewood Wednesday, Jan. 3. Grand Rabbi Rav Matisyahu Chaim Salomon, a longtime leader of Beth Medrash Govoha Yeshiva, a Haredi Jewish learning institution, died on Tuesday, Jan. 2. He was 86 years old. Gov. Phil Murphy was among those who offered his condolences after Rabbi Salomon's death. "I share in the pain over the loss of Rabbi Matisyahu Salomon and send condolences to the BMG Yeshiva community and so many who followed his teachings," Gov. Murphy posted on Twitter. Machete-Wielding Man's Lakewood Menacing Not Considered Anti-Semitic, Authorities Say An incident involving a man who menaced pedestrians with a machete in Lakewood was not believed to have been an anti-Semitic attack, authorities said. Max Sanchez, 22, approached five pedestrians along Forest Avenue near 6th Street with the weapon around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, March 13, local police said. Although the incident occurred in a neighborhood where a large portion of Orthodox Jewish families live, "there is nothing that indicates that Sanchez chose to menace the victims based on their religious beliefs," police said in a statement. Rabbi Rothschild lived on Forest Avenue in the heart of Lakewood Township around the corner from Bais Medrash Govoah, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish Litvak yeshiva. Rothschild was the founder and owner of NPGS, a local food co-op with two locations, one in Lakewood and one in Jackson.
