Crews were responding to three boats on fire after an explosion at a marina in Keyport, officials said. The fire broke out at Brown's Point Marina on Monday, Sept. 9, Keyport's emergency management office said in a Facebook post at 3:53 p.m. Residents were asked to avoid the area near the West Front Street facility. Longtime Edison Firefighter Ray Tobik Dies Suddenly, 58
A family was rallying for support after a former Edison firefighter died, according to a fundraising campaign. Ray Tibok, 58, died suddenly on Thursday, Aug. 8, a GoFundMe page said. He had served as a firefighter for the Edison Township Fire Department for 30 years before retiring in May 2022. The GoFundMe had raised more than $1,400 from at least 11 donations as of Thursday, Aug. 22. Air Force Firefighter Robert Conklin III Dies At 39
Robert J Conklin III, a New Jersey first responder and Air Force veteran, died on Monday, Aug. 12. He was 39 years old. Robert's mother, Arlene Savarese, said that he died of leukemia. Savarese said her son saved his first life at just 10 years old, when he performed the Heimlich maneuver on his aunt. "The rest of the path was set for him," Savarese said. Robert went on to serve as a firefighter in the United States Air Force, helping to evacuate Afghanistan in 2021. Firefighter Injured In Rutgers Barn Blaze
A firefighter was injured battling a fire in a storage barn at Rutgers University in North Brunswick, authorities said. The fire broke out at about 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 11 at the Horticultural Farm property at Rutgers Gardens, according to a university spokeswoman. The building was unoccupied at the time, she said. The fire was contained to the barn with assistance from local fire departments. The Edison Fire Department has announced the death of its treasurer and longtime firefighter Howard Tarlow. The EFD made the announcement Thursday evening, July 11, one day after the police department announced the death of its lieutenant, Donald Ship. Tarlow began his fire service career when he joined the Highland Park Volunteer Fire Department in 2008, after expressing to a friend he wanted to give back to the community, the EFD said on Facebook. A 43-year-old volunteer firefighter was airlifted to the hospital after his vehicle struck a utility pole and went airborne while returning from a call in Ocean County, authorities said.
