The National Park Service has officially called it: Peak bloom for the iconic Yoshino cherry trees was Sunday, March 23.
That means 70% of blossoms are open, and the Tidal Basin is about to turn into a full-on pink-and-white wonderland.
But fair warning: the blooms are breathtaking—and very, very brief.
While they can last a few days, all it takes is one windy storm or a surprise frost to knock those petals off faster than your phone can open the camera app. On the flip side, cool and calm weather could stretch the magic just a little longer.
This year’s bloom schedule sped right up:
- Green buds popped on March 11
- Florets showed by March 16
- Puffy whites arrived by March 23
Forecasting bloom dates? Not easy. The Park Service says it’s nearly impossible to predict more than 10 days out. So if you're wondering when to go: go now.
Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
