A Freightliner truck with a utility trailer was parked on the right shoulder of Route 440 north when a northbound Honda Accord struck it, according to New Jersey State Police.
The driver, Joey Lopez, of Staten Island, left the road, entered the shoulder and struck the trailer at 12:24 p.m. Monday May 1, according to State Police spokesman Sgt. Philip Curry.
Both vehicles caught fire and Lopez died as a result of the crash, Curry said.
The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries, he said.
It was unclear what caused Lopez to leave the highway.
The crash remained under investigation.
