Man Broke Cyclist's Jaw With Closed Fist: Belmar PD A 37-year-old Belmar man was arrested and charged with assaulting a cyclist, authorities announced this week. On Friday, Aug. 22, Anthony Alvear pulled in front of a pair of bicyclists in his dark blue Kia SUV, exited the vehicle and began shouting at them before he struck the bicyclist with a closed fist while he remained on his bicycle, Belmar police said. The bicyclist was taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation, having sustained a broken jaw, requiring surgery, police said. Alvear is charged with aggravated assault and was issued a summons for a noise violation, police said.

Wrong Way DUI NJ Driver Involved In Crash That Killed Cyclist: Police A 20-year-old Perth Amboy driver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in the death of a 71-year-old Kenilworth cyclist in Westfield on Monday, Aug. 4, authorities said. At 9:54 a.m., Anthony Velazquez was driving a 2016 Acura IDX east on West North Avenue when he entered the opposite lane of travel and crashed into a 2022 Ford Transit van traveling west, Westfield police said. Bicyclist, 35, Decapitated By Driver Who Ran Red Light In Elizabeth, Police Say A 35-year-old cyclist was decapitated after he was struck by a vehicle that ran a red light in Elizabeth on the late evening of Sunday, Aug. 11, authorities said. The cyclist was crossing North Avenue and Spring Street when a 20-year-old driver ran a red light and struck him, decapitating him, a spokeswoman for the city said.  The cyclist's identity is being withheld, pending next of kin notification, authorities said. The investigation is ongoing, authorities said. The driver remained on the scene, authorities said.
