Justin Mabus and Tyler Schuldt met as five-year-olds playing tee ball in the Yorktown Little League, became friends, then went their separate ways. Schuldt gravitated to lacrosse and Mabus stayed with baseball. A few years later, Mabus joined Schuldt in lacrosse and it would be a foreshadowing of what was to come. The two would join together on varsity and become a high-scoring midfield duo. This year, they played pivotal roles in leading Yorktown to a Section 1 Class B and regional titles and berth in the state final four.
Based on their outstanding seasons, Mabus and Schuldt were named high school all-Americans, the only two Yorktown players to receive the honor. When Coach Marr called me and told me that Tyler and I were named all-Americans, said Mabus, who will attend Towson University next fall and play lacrosse. To achieve something like this in a sport I always wanted to do and to do it with Tyler, who I have been good friends with since we were kids, makes me extremely happy.
Schuldt, who will attend the University of Hartford next fall and play lacrosse, was on his way to Mabus house when Marr contacted him. Coach Marr told me Justin also made it and that me feel great, Schuldt said. When I got to Justins house, we gave each other a huge hug and congratulated each other. Mabus and Schuldt also join an exclusive club of Yorktown players who have achieved this honor and went on to outstanding collegiate careers. Some of these include Dom Finn, Roy Colsey, Paul Carcaterra and Marr.
It means so much because so many great players have come out of Yorktown, Schuldt said. Its a great honor to be in the same rank with them. To get the call from Coach Marr is also a huge honor. He was a great player and is a legend.
