YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- The colors of the Yorktown Central School District may be green and white, but with an award from the U.S. Secretary of Education, the Huskers can wrap themselves in a nice blue ribbon.
Mildred E. Strang Middle School has been recognized as a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Duncan said the middle school was a model for inspiration for others.
Your status as a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School affirms the broader commitments you have made to expand the horizons of knowledge for all your students by equipping them to explore those horizons wisely, Duncan said. You have demonstrated that, working together, parents, teachers, staff, administrators, and community leaders can nurture all students to reach their full potential. You remind us that with determination and effort, anything is possible.
The middle school, whos principal is Linda Grimm, was one of 19 schools in New York and one of 256 public schools nationally selected for the award. Grimm said it was an honor to be recognized with the award.
At MESMS, our faculty, staff and administration are proud to offer a top quality, comprehensive middle school program for our students, she said. We are dedicated to enhancing student learning and to offering innovative programs and activities that maximize the potential and achievement of our students.
The U.S. Department of Education will distribute the awards at a conference and awards ceremony Nov. 14-15 in Washington, D.C. Dr. Ralph Napolitano, superintendent of Yorktown schools, thanked the hard working staff, faculty, students and administration at the middle school.
We strive to prepare our students to be caring, competent and cooperative citizens who will contribute to, and make a difference in our community and our world, and this honor reflects these efforts, he said.
