CORTLANDT, N.Y. - Students at Lakeland and Walter Panas High schools in the district's science research program took part in the annual Science Symposium last week.
The event at Panas featured all students in the program presenting their posters and research and answering questions from community members and district staff.
The keynote speech was given by Ali A. Javed, director of research and development at Gene Link, Inc., who spoke about "Genetic Anticipation and Neurodegenerative Disorders."
Meanwhile, five senior members of the program each presented their research, which was conducted over several years of their high school career.
Troy Hugick studied "The Winds of Change: An Urban Wind Turbine" and Michael Perrone researched "Improved Physical Modeling: A Nonlinear Model Alternative to Compute-Intensive Absorbing Boundary Conditions."
Tyler Cohen studied "The Classification of Stellar Spectra: Pushing the Limits of Backyard Astronomy"; Samuel Nadell researched "Snowpack Water Retention and its Possible Effects on Mass Balance Measurements on the Lemon Creek Glacier of the Juneau Icefield" and Alisha Juman studied "Mining for Somatic JAK2 Mutations in Pediatric Brain Tumors and Neuroblastoma."
