When Lakeland Valedictorian Leo Guttman found out he was accepted to Harvard, the first person he told was his younger brother, Kyle. He described the rest of his day as if it were just like any other day -- he called his parents to tell them the news, got some ice cream and continued on normally.
When he isnt in school -- taking AP classes such as English, Spanish, macro and environmental science -- Guttman is also involved in the National Honor Society, the math team and the Yorktown Leos Club. Community service is a huge part of this seniors activities, but admittedly he said there are two reasons for his involvement.
When I first was involved in community service it was to fill the community service hours I needed for the National Honor Society, he said. But after that I found out it could be a lot of fun and I did more of it.
Guttman said some of his favorite memories at Lakeland High School have been the trips he attended with the Future Business Leaders of American (FBLA).
We went to competitions and workshops, and had some down time to explore the cities, he said. He was able to explore such places as Orlando and Washington D.C. as a member of the club. Although he said he isn't sure what clubs he plans to join while at Harvard, he has already added himself to a few email lists.
At Harvard, Guttman hasnt quite made up his mind on what hed like to explore.
Im not sure what Ill do yet, but probably something with math or science or maybe economics, he said.
Before he leaves for Harvard, Guttman is faced with the same question so many of his other peers are facing -- where to find a summer job.
In the past, he gladly tutored elementary school students in third grade and high school students for the SAT. I think its better than a regular old summer job, he said.
He wasnt able to pick a favorite class throughout all of his years at Lakeland schools, but this year he said he enjoyed himself most in a class few other students would list at their top -- AP Macro.
It was pretty easy, and I had a lot of fun in it, he said.
