SHRUB OAK, N.Y. To wrap up their study of endangered species, Lakeland High students were treated to a visit by Atka, a 10-year old Artic Gray Wolf from The Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem.
Atkas visit was funded by a grant from Lakelands Education Foundation by art teacher Tiffany Dyckman. The ambassador wolf for the conservation center was accompanied by retired Lakeland district chairperson of art and music, Lois Kral.
Kral made a short presentation about the wolves and the centers work. Student learned that Atka visits schools, nature centers, museums and libraries to help people learn about the importance of his wild brothers and sisters. Kral explained the center's mission is to educate people about wolves, their relationship in the environment and the human role in protecting their future.
The grant allowed teachers to incorporate instruction about endangered species and sustainability into their work with students, the district said. Based on their studies, students created T-shirts and art work about what they learned.
Lakeland High School Principal Cheryl Camp thanked teacher Dyckman as well as the foundation for supporting and funding the assembly.
