YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- After five years as a trustee on the Yorktown Board of Education Mark Drexel announced he will retire from his position.
You know they say that you really dont know a person unless youve lived with them, and Im going to have to add something to that. You really dont know a person well unless you sat on a board like this, go into executive session, and you really see a person for what theyre worth and what theyre ideals are worth, Drexel said last month. And I have to tell you that the people around this table are some of the best people that I ever want to call friends.
Drexel said a promotion at work gave him with more responsibility and the growth of his side business left him without the amount of time he would like to dedicate to the board as he has the past five years.
Ive gotten a lot more responsibility over the years and I just dont have the time anymore to dedicate the way I want to to this board in the way that I have the past five years so Im going to retireand Im going to use that wordfrom the board at the end of this month, Drexel said. And I just want to thank everybody involved and I know that Im leaving the district in some great hands.
Before his announcement Drexel reflected on the transformations students make from elementary school to high school that he has the opportunity to watch as a trustee.
Theres an enormous benefit sitting up here and watching the elementary performances at each of the meetings, its just heartwarming. And then to see the middle schoolers, you get to see their accomplishments at such a young age. And then you look at the high schoolers, what promising futures .its just nice to be able to see that and share that, Drexel said.
Despite Drexels retirement, he did hint to board members he might attend meetings as a resident.
You know, its been six years since I was on the other side of that microphone, Drexel joked in regard to the podium used for public comment.
Board President Jackie Carbone said she welcomed Drexels comments in the futureand told him what an impact he had on her as a board member.
Mark you are going to be sorely missed. You have been, I think I told you guys, I call you my contrarian. You always make me see other sides to things, and its so much appreciated and youre such a valuable member of this team, Carbone said. Im a better board member for having had you on the board.
The board has announced that it will fill the vacant position through an application process.
