Drexel will Retire from Yorktown School Board

YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- After five years as a trustee on the Yorktown Board of Education Mark Drexel announced he will retire from his position.

“You know they say that you really don’t know a person unless you’ve lived with them, and I’m going to have to add something to that. You really don’t know a person well unless you sat on a board like this, go into executive session, and you really see a person for what they’re worth and what they’re ideals are worth,” Drexel said last month.  “And I have to tell you that the people around this table are some of the best people that I ever want to call friends.”

Drexel said a promotion at work gave him with more responsibility and the growth of his side business left him without the amount of time he would like to dedicate to the board as he has the past five years.

“I’ve gotten a lot more responsibility over the years and I just don’t have the time anymore to dedicate the way I want to to this board in the way that I have the past five years so I’m going to retire—and I’m going to use that word—from the board at the end of this month,” Drexel said. “And I just want to thank everybody involved…and I know that I’m leaving the district in some great hands.”

Before his announcement Drexel reflected on the transformations students make from elementary school to high school that he has the opportunity to watch as a trustee.

“There’s an enormous benefit sitting up here and watching the elementary performances at each of the meetings, it’s just heartwarming. And then to see the middle schoolers, you get to see their accomplishments at such a young age. And then you look at the high schoolers, what promising futures….it’s just nice to be able to see that and share that,” Drexel said.

Despite Drexel’s retirement, he did hint to board members he might attend meetings as a resident.

“You know, it’s been six years since I was on the other side of that microphone,” Drexel joked in regard to the podium used for public comment.

Board President Jackie Carbone said she welcomed Drexel’s comments in the future—and told him what an impact he had on her as a board member.

“Mark you are going to be sorely missed. You have been, I think I told you guys, I call you my contrarian. You always make me see other sides to things, and it’s so much appreciated and you’re such a valuable member of this team,” Carbone said. “I’m a better board member for having had you on the board.”

The board has announced that it will fill the vacant position through an application process.
