Bronx resident Carlos Colon was arrested on Saturday, March 2 in connection with a grand larceny incident that happened in Yorktown on the same day, Yorktown Police announced on Monday, March 4.
According to the department, at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, officers learned that the victim had been contacted by someone posing as a lawyer who claimed his granddaughter had been arrested. The caller also told the victim that he would need to collect cash from him to help in handling her case and free her from custody, police said.
To collect the cash, Colon allegedly arranged for hired drivers to pick up envelopes of varying amounts of cash from the victim at three different points during the day. From this scheme, the victim lost a total of $60,100, according to authorities.
Eventually, the victim spoke with his granddaughter and realized he had been scammed. He then reported the scam to police, who helped him arrange a fourth cash pickup with the suspect. Officers then detained the hired driver who arrived to grab the cash and realized he was not involved in the scheme.
The department, with the help of the New York City Police Department, then conducted a controlled delivery of a decoy cash envelope at a location in the Bronc where it was supposed to be dropped off. Colon allegedly grabbed the envelope upon delivery and was then arrested at the scene and taken to Yorktown, police said.
Colon, who was charged with third-degree grand larceny, was arraigned in court and taken to Westchester County Jail. He will next appear in court on Thursday, March 7.
