YORKTOWN, N.Y. With temperatures rising into the high 90s on Wednesday, many Yorktown residents decided to cool off at Sparkle Lake rather than hide indoors.
Jessica Landsberg arrived at the lake at 11 a.m. with her daughter and was still going strong around 2 p.m. She enjoys lounging on the sand and playing beach volleyball with the kids, but wishes the lake had maintained the concession stand that used to be inside the service building.
I think if they did that the lake itself would pick up, she said, since beach goers usually enjoy snacks and drinks while soaking up the sun.
Lifeguard Sonja Gspurning described the peak hours at Sparkle Lake, which currently has lifeguards working shifts from 1 to 6 p.m.
Most people come around lunch time or when parents get off from work, between 4 and 5, she explained. When shes not on duty, Gspurning stays cool by drinking lots of water and taking dips whenever possible.
Thursday may bring even warmer temperatures, so residents are planning accordingly. Landsberg plans on going to Sherwood Island State Park in Connecticut for a breezier change of scenery. For now, shes hoping to hear that familiar, iconic sound of summer: the ice cream truck.
