To the editor:
Four Republicans, including Supervisor Michael Grace now have a super majority on the Town Board. Their first decree was to change long-standing rules concerning public comment during Board meetings. Taxpayers will have to wait hours to get their chance to speak. That will discourage participation. There's also a question as to whether taxpayer’s comments will even be televised.
Public comment, just like in Orwell’s "Animal Farm" has been deemed not to be “Town Business” and of little value.
To further enhance the speed in which democracy is dispensed, Grace suggested that you can Facebook or Tweet him your thoughts. #GoodLuckWithThat.
These changes will no doubt speed things up at the expense of silencing the public. That’s Un-American. This streamline process will allow this Town board's to quiet potential critics.
This new "HIVE MIND" of Republicans leaves little time or room for opposition or discussion. Hopefully unlike old Star Trek episodes, “Resistance Is Not Futile".
Letters to the Editor may be Yorktowners last chance to have their voices heard. The news media may need to be the voice for Yorktown residents. They need to report on what’s happening in the shadows.
Republicans think that these changes will limit their exposure and protect themselves from further scrutiny. Hope they’re wrong and that taxpayers push back. All that's left on Grace's to-do list is to neuter the Ethics Board, push through a taxpayer funded $4,800,000+ Depot Square plan, and hopefully pay all of his delinquent taxes.
