YORKTOWN, N.Y. Attendants at the Friends of FDR State Park event Saturday showed you don't have to have an abundance of snow to learn how to snowshoejust the curiosity to learn, and perhaps a tractor full of snow.
Friends of FDR State Park held its first snowshoe in the park event on Saturday, despite the lack of snow. The event, held Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. taught attendants how to snowshoe, cold-weather tips and allowed them to practice it out themselves, even if the ground surrounding them featured matted grass rather than fluffy snow.
"The snowshoe event went pretty well despite beautiful un-January like weather," said Anwer Qureishi, vice president of Friends of FDR State Park. "The park manager collected snow on a tractor and helped make a snow patch for the participants to experience snowshoeing properly."
The event was sponsored by REI, and a REI instructor led the lesson as members and guests of the Friends of FDR said they were happy to participate. In the announcement of the event, guests were notified that the show would still go on even without the right precipitation.
The events organizers said it adhered to the mission of the group, which is to provide a voice for the park's unique and diverse resources and to provide "opportunities for people to develop a special relationship with the parks and to contribute to the parks programs and stewardship."
