YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- The Yorktown Farmers Market is making a comeback.

The farmers market, which ran in town in the summer of 2012, will be opening at the Jefferson Valley Mall on April 22 at 9 a.m. and will be running through Sept. 16.

The original Yorktown Farmers Market ran behind the firehouse and ended up donating $11,000 to charity. Karen Muendell, a chef, helped manage the market and found it took a lot of work.

"It killed the whole summer for us," Muendell said. "As my boys older and got into all kinds of sports, I couldn't keep it up. I let it go."

Yorktown residents never forgot and Muendell said people kept asking her to bring the market back. Two months ago, the the Jefferson Valley Mall reached out to see if Muendell would be interested in hosting the market there.

"They are very supportive," Muendell said. "They want to be a part of the community and are open to hosting events. They have an open door policy."

Muendell said the Hudson Valley has some of the most amazing farmland in the Northeast.

"We have access to things to grown locally and seasonally," Muendell said. "It helps our immune system, it helps our energy and metabolism, it helps everything. Our farmers use organic practices and that is important.

Supporting local farmers also helps support the community, Muendell said.

"By supporting them, you're supporting yourself," Muendell said. "It's reciprocal."
