If It's Wednesday It's Comedy Night In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. ? Veteran standup comic Jessica Kirson will be dropping one-liners at Wednesday Comedy Night at the Empire City Casino in Yonkers. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts promptly at 8.

Kirson has appeared on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," NBC's "Last Comic Standing" and Comedy Central's "Premium Blend." She will be appearing with Michael Blaustein and Mark Serritella. Tickets are $15 for non-members, $5 for Empire members, free for Elite members.

The Yonkers Daily Voice: You've worked as a standup comedian for two decades. Does it get easier?

Kirson: It gets easier in certain ways. You can pick and choose more what shows you want to do. You definitely get more respect, and you pretty much know you can handle most crowds. The fear is always there, unless you are on some kind of salary.

DV: Do women have it tougher than men in the standup world?

Kirson: If you are a funny woman there is always work. The problem is that you can be just as funny or funnier than the average male comic, but it is very, very hard to get booked as a headliner in a major comedy club if you are a woman. If you look at the schedules of most of the major clubs, there are barely any female comics. That is how you build an audience and get to make some money.

DV: You've performed at Empire City in Yonkers before. What do you like about it?

Kirson: I loved how diverse the audience was. All kinds of people. I also love talking to the audience, and each time I had a blast doing that there.

DV: Do you have a preference where you perform ? casino, theater, comedy club?

Kirson: No, not really. I just love to perform. I love doing theaters. The spaces are usually amazing and the audiences are great. They are all fun in their own ways.

DV: What should people expect when they come to see you?

Kirson: Honesty, high energy, a lot of characters. A comic like you have never seen before.
